The Myths

"Pit Bulls" have locking jaws.
(No they do not)

BTW the Pit Bull seen in this video is the
Purina 2007 IDC National Champion

See Wallace in action

The Myth
Pit bulls have massive jaw strength that can be measured in terms of pounds per square inch(PSI) & locking jaws.

The Truth
Dr. Brisbin, as well as the other experts, testified that pit bulls do not have locking jaws.
Based on actual dog dissections and measurement of their skulls, the evidence demonstrated that pit bull jaw muscles and bone structure are the same as other similarly sized dogs.
No evidence was presented to demonstrate that a pit bull's bite is any stronger than other dogs of its size and build.
He stated that, contrary to information relied upon and perpetuated by earlier case law2 and law review articles,3 assertions that a pit bull can bite with a "force of 2,000 pounds per square inch" have absolutely no basis in fact or scientific proof.
The testing of dog bite strength has never been done, and would be difficult if not impossible to perform.4
Toledo v. Tellings, 2006 WL 513946 (Ohio App. 6 Dist), March 2006 (See Pg 7)

Expert in behavior, training and handling of pit bull terriers and their anatomy)
Study Prompts Repeal of Breed Specific Law

The Myth

Some Breeds or Breed types are more aggressive towards humans

The Truth
This Study has statistically shown, based on a defined temperament test, that the classification of dog breeds and dog breed types(breed groups),with respect to their aggressiveness towards humans is not supported scientifically.

The Myth
"Pit Bulls" inflict injuries unlike other Dogs.

The Truth
"No breed or type of dog has a particular method of attack or inflicts an exclusive type of injury. Claims that one breed of dog inflicts injuries unlike other breeds have no merit."

The Myth
The Merritt Clifton(Editor of Animal People) "study" is credible

The Truth

The Myth
"Pit Bulls" and Rottweilers are "the dogs most likely to bite" or "the most dangerous dogs"

The Truth
From the CDC
...A CDC study on fatal dog bites lists the breeds involved in fatal attacks over 20 years
(Breeds of dogs involved in fatal human attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998).
It does not identify specific breeds that are most likely to bite or kill, and thus is not appropriate for policy-making decisions related to the topic. Each year, 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs. These bites result in approximately 16 fatalities; about 0.0002 percent of the total number of people bitten. These relatively few fatalities offer the only available information about breeds involved in dog bites. *** There is currently no accurate way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed, and consequently no measure to determine which breeds are more likely to bite or kill....
Wrong Numbers not Statistics

Both the CDC and AVMA have released statements due to the misuse/misinterpretation of the CDC Study to justify BSL
